BLEPHAROSPASM (EYELID CRAMPS)
Like undesired wrinkles around the eyebrows or the forehead, involuntary twitching of the face and eye muscles (blepharospasm) can also be successfully treated by means of local injections.
Eyelid cramps (blepharospasms) cause the ring muscle around the eye (musculus orbicularis oculi) to contract to such an extent that the cramps will force the eye to close. These cramps are involuntary and vary in severity. Often the intensity of the eyelid cramps also increases over time, and ranges from more frequent blinking to an inability to open the eyes. These symptoms can cause severe stress and discomfort.
The exact cause of blepharospasm is as yet unknown. With the exception of injection therapy, no other treatment for blepharospasm is currently available. The injections cause limited paralysis and thereby relax the muscles around the eyes. The treatment takes effect after approximately 7 days and usually lasts for about 3 months.
